INFRASTRUCTURE / OPERATIONS
ByteGeist Infrastructure Lab
A self-hosted infrastructure lab for running services, observing their health, and documenting how the environment is deployed and recovered.

The project
I maintain a personal cloud environment on a Hetzner host running Ubuntu and Docker. The public ByteGeist control plane presents the environment’s architecture, service inventory, operational evidence, and sanitized live telemetry.
The lab provides practical experience with Linux administration, containerized services, reverse-proxy routing, identity, monitoring, and recovery documentation.
How the environment fits together
- Ingress: Nginx Proxy Manager handles HTTPS certificates and routes requests to services.
- Identity: Authentik provides authentication for configured internal applications.
- Workloads: Docker containers run the lab’s applications and supporting services.
- Observability: Prometheus collects metrics, Grafana presents dashboards, and Loki with Grafana Alloy supports log collection.
- Delivery: Gitea hosts source repositories and Woodpecker runs deployment workflows.
What the public dashboard shows
The dashboard displays CPU load, memory use, host uptime, running container count, scrape-target health, and selected service checks from a sanitized status API. It also includes architecture and documented evidence for logging, service inventory, delivery, identity, and recovery.
Live readings describe the current sample. Screenshots and configuration evidence describe a captured state and are labeled separately on the dashboard.
Practical skills
- Operating Linux services and Docker workloads.
- Following a request through DNS, TLS, proxy routing, and the application.
- Using host metrics and logs to investigate availability problems.
- Maintaining source-controlled configurations and deployment workflows.
- Documenting service dependencies and recovery steps.
Evidence and current state
